Photo's captured in 2008 for the Daily forum
Nov 4: Fall's expression of Colors
I left work early yesterday as I was under the weather. I had an opportunity to capture these trees in their fall glory around here before I retired. I just happened to look out the back window when feeding the kittens and saw this so I grabbed my camera for a quick shot think of my POD. The morning sun just highlighted the great colors that were there for the viewing. Today is a new day and I am doing better and I am off to stand in line. Have a good day everyone.
The Draw Challenge...11/03/08
The Challenge: Create a photo with your interpretation of the word, "Draw."
The Participants: Kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, jawsnap, Creative Deviance, and myself.
The Result: The drawing of a card overlaying a drawing. I set this shot up with multiple layers with a pencil drawing of a sunset as the base. then I layered a card table on top. I embedded my studio logo into the table and setup a poker hand. My daughter assisted with the drawing of the cards for the final results.
Nov 2: Smugmuger visit the Eastern Shore
I had the pleasure of having lunch with Hillary, her husband Steve, and Alex. We all meet in Cape Charles on the eastern shore for the afternoon to do some talking, talk cameras, photo's and to take some pictures. We had a VERY enjoyable afternoon and my wife Brenda and daughter Kara enjoyed meeting everyone. My wife succeeded in her mission of staying out of the photo's :) The group shot on the top was taken by my wife Brenda of the 3 of us, Alex, Hillary & myself. I must say is was a great afternoon and we did not end up leaving till late that day Looking forward to meeting these folks again and other members. I have not looked yet, but I look forward to seeing the others group shot. Have a great day!
Oct 30: Artistic Impressions
I did my usual walk yesterday, it was cold and blustery, I forgot my camera. So I took the shots with my point & shoot and was not happy with any that I took. I did this shot instead as I was inspired by Lyndon's texture mapping and I did some experimenting with this picture to get this effect you see here. Each layer is different and I blended them together to get the overall effect you see here. Then I made a frame to go around the shot based on the colors in the picture.
Oct 31: Backup to the resque.
This was not my choice for today's POD but smuggie was down when I tried to post this AM. I had to leave for work so no picture. I see they have their glitch fixed so I pulled this from my other directory for today. Shot using a texture effect in Photoshop
Oct 29: Expressions in Black & White I did a short walk yesterday at lunch. It was cold and all I had was a thin windbreaker. Guess old man winter had to visit sooner or later :) While walking I saw this leaf on my way back and I liked the way it sat in the puddle and the wind was blowing it around the puddle in the parking lot. I really liked the texture and feel of the shot and I wanted to do something with this shot. I went into PS and just started adjusting different positions on the black & white conversion to I found what my vision said was there. The new adjusting tool in CS4 is nice, like in LR so adjusting the tone in 1 spot was a lot easier to do. I did save my thoughts in the note area with the note tool after a hint on how it worked, thanks K. I did do a texture shot that I got the idea from Lyndon on and I have placed the shot here. Texture Have a great day everyone.
Oct 28: Hello, can I help you?
I caught this little guy on my lunch walk as I was rounding the corner back to the building. He was in the ground checking out the wares in the area. He was a bit animated when I grabbed the shot as he ran up his tree. I did the conversion to B&W on this shot. I liked the textures and contrast of the result. Have a good day
The Kleenex® Challenge...10/27/08 The Challenge: Create a piece using Kleenex® tissues.
The Participants: kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, jawsnap, and myself.
The Result: My vision of the challenge. I made a placemat using a basket weave pattern out of 3 different color Kleenex, a 3 dimensional pyramid, a star, my daughter cut the snow flake and shaped the box so I could make a tissue Kleenex box. The only items not Kleenex are the silverware I used as a prop.
Oct 26: Snack Time
This is a shot I have been wanting to try so I took the time yesterday to setup the shot late in the afternoon. I find studio work a little harder with 2 curious kittens in the house. You cannot leave a shot setup and walk away as one of them will check it out. I shot a lot of pictures before I decided on the tea lights to set the mood with a compact fluorescent lamp bounced off the back ceiling in the background to give some front lighting. I was a lot of tries to get the lighting to a temp and degree I wanted and a few visits from both Mittens and Marco to see what was on the desk and what I was doing. This was a 50 sec exposure to get the final result. Kara said the cookies were good to and I must admit she was right. After the shot we ate the evidence.
Oct 25: Blowing in the wind
I was out yesterday looking for something for the POD when I spied this Crepe Mertle leaf blowing in the wind. It had just rained and was still overcast so I was not sure if I was going to stay dry. I really liked the way the leaf looked so I tried with the wind to capture the leaf with the marco that I had on the camera. I took several shot, but this was the best. The wind would not stop long enough for any thing else. The only PP was some sharpening in PS. Have a good Day
Oct 24: A bird in the bush
I was out walking yesterday at lunch with my wife when we saw this bird land very close. I had my wife stand still while I quickly grabbed a few shot before he/she flew away. I had to do some PP on this shot as the bird was a bit under exposed due to the quick grab as I had been shooting flowers. I liked the way the bird turned out. Happy Friday everyone!
Oct 23: Morning on the Bay
I captured this shot on the way into work. The picture caught my eye and I turned around and drove back to this location to capture the shot. I was not dressed for the weather but I stood there anyway and took shots for 20 min. This is a 30 sec exposure shot on the bay with my remote trigger. Temps had dropped from the 60's to 48 with the wind blowing off the water at 15-20. I could hear the wind howling through the masts. A couple of masts on the left side you can see the blur hence movement in these masts. The line in background is the interstate that is leading to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Tunnel over to Norfolk. Have a great day
Oct 22: Textures
I saw this fresh pile of sand on the beach where they were building the new seawall. I really liked the textures of the sand and the colors of the sky in the shot. Great abstract feel to this picture. The shot was taken through the walk railings as I was in dress clothes and not able to get into a better position to take the shot. Enjoy the day
Oct 21: Fall Deliveries
I saw this car full of pumpkins when I was on my lunch walk yesterday. I had just come down from the moat walk and was looking for something different to fill the days bill. I saw this display on one of the houses and I walked into get a better shot. I took a pair and I liked this the best. Enjoy the day
Thanks to everyone who commented and enjoyed the challenge. Everyone is a winner in this event.
Oct 20: Water Bottle Challenge Dad, For Me?...10/20/08 The Challenge: Create a piece using a water bottle. The Participants: kre8ive, Bill Pador, and myself. The Result: This is mine, no fish were harmed or eaten in this shot. We even got babies after I put the fish in the big tank! Marco was intrigued with the bottle and the fish. He really wanted to play! You can click on the links to see if the others have posted theirs yet.
Oct 19 The smile that warms my heart
This shot was taken last week but I was not able to do some needed editing on the picture to remove some of the details the harsh direct light my big flash rendered. I was able yesterday to do this editing after my inside chores were done as it rained all day. I got this close but I was not able to get the tone right. The final tweak on the tone was done by Kathleen (kre8ive) for me to remove some of the cast on the skin my daughter would not like. Thanks Kathleen from both Kara & I. We appreciate the help!!!
Oct 18: Escaping this place
It was rainy, cold and damp at lunch so I did not get my usual walk in. When I came home tired I had no clue for a shot for my DP. I the kittens playing took a few shots. I got Marco asleep on the fish tank :) Then Mittens jumped onto my leather chair, we have a blanket on the chair so she loves to sleep on this chair and it's right next to my desk. I grabbed my camera which had the macro installed and snapped this shot. She was so cute in that pose. I also decide to do a little photoshop work on the shot so I could use the CS4 I got the day before. This is an old method I learned from Scott Kelby in the CS1 days.
Here is a good laugh for you. as I was posting this Marco, Mittens brother is just staring at the screen and wants his sister. He has actually jumped on the screen to "help" me with this narration. Enjoy the weekend FOlks!
Oct 17: Contrasting Colors
I saw this on my walk yesterday at lunch. I was in a bit of a daze and funk as that was how the day was going. Tired cause I stayed up to late again and tired as I was very busy. I took a bunch of shot, but really had no idea for pictures. Same area a lot and you miss things or have seen to much of that thing. I spotted this down by the fishing boats, one of the trees is actually showing color! I snapped about 6 shots and moved on back to work happy I had something I thought was worth wild. I cannot wait for all the other trees to change to usable colors beside brown.
Happy Friday Folks!
Oct 16: Morning across the bay
I captured this on the way into work. This is what I see now on the bay in my commute. I normally carry the tripod to my point and shoot. Yesterday I thought of the light I see reflecting on the water when I go into work and I put my good tripod in my trunk. I took advantage of the equipment as this is a 45 sec exposure in manual. I had to bracket the focus as there was not enough contrast for the autofocus to work. The only PP is a +1/3 EV of exposure. I normally as a rule add nothing to an available light shot. The pier is from a restaurant that passed to the elements after hurricane isabel.
Oct 14: A pale Rose I came outside and saw that the tiny bud I had seen had bloomed. It's Oct and I have roses :) I really liked they way the sun backlight the pedals and made the veining in the pedals stand out. You can see where a bug had some lunch on the top pedals before the bloom opened. The colors were great and mother nature did all the work. This is straight from the camera sans removal of 2 spots I had on the lens :( Spots were in all the pictures and the same spot so I know it's the sensor. Time to get that cleaned. Need to read Bill's Blog on this and order the Perk pads needed. Karina, I did put up that 15" Lincoln Gun in the Antique solorazation here as you asked. Lincoln Gun Have a great day!
Oct 13: Natural Selective Coloring:
I saw this when we were in the park to feed the ducks. This is straight from the camera. This is what I saw through the viewfinder when I took the shot. The red admits all the grey much from the tide made for a great shot. It is not very often that nature does this for us.
I am going to get caught again with this feature photo stuff as i forget.
I also did "SKYPE" yesterday and bought the video hookup for my MAC. ID is svtpowered.
Oct 12: Panoramic Sunset As promised this is one of the sunsets I did not finish as I fell asleep before I could process all 13 pano's. This one is a 5 shot three exposure HDR panoramic plus the pano for a total of 21 shots to make this frame. The picture is pretty much straight from the camera as I left the HDR settings flat. I did have to crop the shot to remove a piece of trash in the foreground I missed on the initial edit. Hope you enjoy. I put up some more Pano and sunsets from that evening in these Galleries. There is a HDR shot from prior to sunset that I want to go back to in about 1 month and see the color difference. Here are the two sunset shot I captured Sunsets. Here are the Panoramic shots I captured Panoramic shots. That are 3 Panoramics one prior to sunset and 2 at sunset
Oct 11: Simplicity
We went out on the Colonial parkway in the afternoon to see what we could see for color and to get maybe a before and after shot. I took a lot of pictures last night and a lot of panoramics and HDR shots. I was up till 2AM when I fell asleep trying to finish processing. Looking at them right now I can tell I finished 2 of the 12 panoramics I took with 8 being HDR shots. I am going to finish them later this morning when I am more awake. MY daughter was holding this flower over the lake last night and I took the shot at dusk with the popup flash on the camera I like the dof and the colors of the shot. Enjoy the weekend Those sunsets should look good once I stich them together in PS.
Oct 10: A Rose is a Rose
I was doing some chores in the yard yesterday AM when I saw this bloom on our rose bush. Like the others I figure this is maybe my last of the year. I see 2 more buds, but I am not hopeful. I like the way the light from the overcast sky was playing on this so I went and got my camera and took several shots hand held before I went back to my chores. I really liked this shot best of the group. It's the weekend, Enjoy!!
Oct 9: Lincoln Gun
It was a very busy day for me with a lot to do during the day. I was in meeting and handling suspenses till I left work. I never got a chance to go out at lunch and ate while working a report. I was fried when I came home so I decided to use this shot from yesterday as my POD. I wanted to do something with this gun that sits in the park/parade field behind my office. This is a 15" Lincoln gun that was used in the civil was era. These were placed on the casemate walls to protect and defend the installation. The 15" shell is in front of the gun. I played around in PS a bit with the shot and ended up using the NIK Color Effects Pro on the shot after I did one in B&W. This is the solorazation effect on a blurred background. Happy Friday!
Oct 8: Pot - o- Gold
I was able to capture this shot on my walk yesterday afternoon. I had another banner day with a lot of shot so it was had deciding which picture for POD. I decided on this pot of flowers as I liked the colors and the lattice reflection on the brickwork wall. I liked the interplay and worked hard to keep it in the shot. Thanks to everyone for the comments on yesterday's picture! I was super busy at work and I will catchup ASAP
Oct 7: Up close and personal
I went out for my walk at lunch yesterday with the intension of getting a better shot of the spider from yesterday. I had my SB800 on the bracket so to light the subject better than the onboard flash. I did and I got some flowers and I saw this honey bee. I think I chased him around for quite a while but it was worth the effort. I got really close before he flew off on the last few shots. The sun gave me front lighting and I used the flash for side fill light. It was a fantastic day at lunch with over 100 pictures taken. I have never done that in 30 min before.
Have a great day!
Oct 6: Blazing colors
I went for my walk yesterday and I saw a few items of interest to photograph. i decided to be different and carry the macro for a different perspective. I was caught in some precarious positions yesterday by folks. This shot I spotted walking around a corner. I really liked what the sunlight did in backlighting this shot. It was however a bit difficult to get as the wind was blowing and I had to raise the ISO to even capture the shot. I was leaning against one of the 6" cannons in front of the museum to capture this shot to get a stable platform. The 6" are small and mounted on concrete platforms next to this tree. I had 1 leg on the platform the other on the ground :)
Enjoy and have a good day
Oct 5: Surrender Field I went out to Yorktown yesterday looking for something different and possiably some fall colors. As you can see from the shot we do not have a lot of color yet. It still pretty warm here with the evenings in the low 60's to high 50's. It needs to get a little cooler at the end of the month for the leaves to start changing and show us some color. I set the camera up in the lot here a the field as I like the view and the conditions were great. The sky was so clear and blue that it made a great shot with out any additional work. 4 shot panoramic with the brown grass in foreground cropped. I put up two other fall color shots here FallSigh, it's Monday Have a good week everyone
Oct 4: Panoramic Sunset on the River I was looking to do a panoramic shot today and wondered where to take my shots. I waited late in the day so I decide to go to on of my favorite spots to catch sunsets and see what would pan out. The day was nice but the gnats ate me up shooting these shots. This is a 30 shot HDR converted into a panoramic and then shrunk to fit. Original was right at 300M. The only problem with taking multi pano's is the time it takes to process on this machine. I was up till midnight finishing this shot for today. Here is an alternate Halloween theme shot for the day halloween Enjoy the remainder of the weekend To answer the questions on the house. No it is not mine, we saw this on the way home from the river and I stopped to take the shot.
Oct 3: Building Artistic Impression
I went for a walk yesterday at lunch took several picture but nothing really jumped as POD. I have a few others I will put up when we come back from the kittens vet checkup. I liked this shot for it's range of color tones and textures so I went into PS to see what I could accomplish that was in the Oct colorful theme. This is my impression of that for today. This is a duplex residence on the post.
Oct 2: The stories I could tell!
I did not get much time yesterday at lunch due to meetings I was in and had to attend so I mad a short loop just to get some air. I took my camera and I saw the old trees we have on Post and their shapes intrigued me. I shot a few when I saw this shot and the tree called to me. I could see where many a person has sat on this branch and swung, talked and climbed this old majestic Oak. The conditions were great as the sky was very blue and clear. the temps were very mild and the breeze was nice. I could tell where many a person had spent time on the bend in this tree like I wanted to do vs going back to work. The stories this tree could tell if it could talk. the tree is over 125 years old. Happy Friday!
October 1: Last blooms
I captured this yesterday during my walk with my point and shoot. With my car being worked on and having to park in limbo land I did not want to leave my camera so I carried my little one. I sure did miss my big Nikon! Funny how you get use to the features of what ever model camera it is you use and when you have to use another you are less happy. The shutter lag like to drove me nuts yesterday as I had got use to the burst speed of the camera and I missed a few shots on timing. My butterfly shots were yuck! I saw a few flower shots while I was walking, I figure these are the last of the year as we are actually getting below 70 now and the flower will give up the ghost once it gets to 50 or less at night. I captured a lilly that was fading and this one. I liked the blur and the color so I decided to use this shot. I will catchup on comments today as I go sick last night and went to bed early.
Sept 30: Magic Mushrooms
I caught these on my walk yesterday afternoon. the day was overcast and cloudy setting the mood for the shot. I liked they way these looked and took a few shots. Tp capture this I laid down in the grass with the camera and snapped a few trying to set the depth of field and the mood. I liked this shot and I liked the B&W conversion for the mood it sets. The shrooms look like alien life dome somewhat
Sept 29: Curiosity
I did my usual walk at lunchtime today caught some late flower and this little bird running through the flower bed. I took several shots but this one caught my eye as I really liked the look on his/her face in this shot. This shot was done in Lightroom with very little adjustment. Have a great day everyone
Thanks to Gail for the idenity of this mocking bird!
Sept 28: Fall Colors after the rain It was a slow day spent working around the house this afternoon doing chores and such. With the off and on rain I did not see much to photograph. I was looking out the back window when I saw the rain trough the trees and the sun peeking through. I was intrigued and got my camera. I took a few shots, but the light was low so I grabbed my 70-200 and took a group at f/2.8 I really liked this shot with the clear picture and the water. One leave with the red-yellow of fall and the other a green of summer. Have a great day I put a few others up in the Fall Colors directory. Fall Colors It the first 3 shots. All the shots were hand held as was this one.
Sept 27: Artistic Impressions
I saw this group of flowers yesterday still in bloom so I took some shots. I like this single shot as it has some nice blur and lent itself to an artistic feel I decided to try something I have never done before for this shot. I have never done an artistic impression shot so I gave this whirl a few different ways till I found what I liked. Enjoy the shot and the remainder of the weekend.
Sept 26: Color in the rain
I took my car into service yesterday morning so I decided to take my wife to breakfast after we dropped my car off. I took a few shots at the dealership and some gong down the road as my wife drove. I spied this shot on the way in and took a bunch available light but they were not very good as I had camera shake. Lowest ISO on this one is 400 and usable is 200. I used 100 and the flash to capture this shot. I really liked the way the colors and the light hit the leaves in this shot. In lightroom I added +5 black and +10 Clarity
Have a good weekend everyone
Sept 25 Available light Panoramic
I had another day when I was busy all day and with the rain I got no chance to take any pictures so I reached back for this picture. I took this shot one evening off the balcony of the place we were staying in Kitty Hawk (OBX). This is a 4 shot panoramic with a 3 minute exposure. Shot with night WB and manual mode using the MC-36 timer and the RRS brackets. The shot was OK in color but really interesting in B&W. I liked the movement of the clouds in the shot and the blurring you see from the movement. The line in the foreground is the path for the golf course behind us.
Sept 24: Working Class Ducks
I did not get a chance to walk again at lunch and I was a bit desperate for a shot. I saw this glass paperweight that one of the ladies in my office had. I liked it and she gave me permission to shoot this. I did and when I returned the paperweight to her cabinet I saw these ducks on her desk and thought they were cute and took a few shots. I could not resist the construction ducks as the shot appealed to me. I tried this black & white conversion and liked the results. To add a chuckle the writing on the poster in the back says "Spearhead Attack", Ducks on the attack.
Thanks to everyone for all the comments on my office panoramic shot.
Sept 23: View of my office
I was inspired after seeing Lesley's, Dave's and Bill's "view from my chair" and thought what I cold do along that line. As I spent most of today working including through lunch I did not get a chance to take any shots for the POD till I got home. I started thinking about the shot on the way home and decided to try a pano. I did a 5 shot pano and then this 25 shot pano of my office area. I put the tripod in the center and mounted up my pano setup and fired up 25 shots at 24 mm to make this setup. It took PS 45 min to make this pano it was so big. Original size was 563M; 104W by 16H I reduced this a lot to make it fit.
Sept 22: Water Colors I captured this shot first thing in the morning. I had been at work about 1.5 hrs when I went out to close the outside doors as the air was working again. (Yes we still have out AC on) It was ~ 7:30 and time for the sun to come up but the heavy clouds were not letting us see the sunrise. However the sky was really blue and looked cool so I ventured down to my car and got the camera and snapped a few shots. This was taken off the second floor balcony where I work. I cropped out the parking lot as that was a bit boring in the shot. I could not frame the shot without parking lot as this balcony sits over the lot. It was either parking lot or concrete pillars so I opted for lot that I could remove. I drove the blacks to +10 in LR to give me the silhouette effect I was looking for at the bottom and went into Photoshop and added a film effect to get this look. I used the Kodachrome 64 effect and it drove the saturation of the blue really deep to what I would term a watercolors – painted look. I liked the shot so you get to see this as my POD. The edge effect is something I learned from a Dave cross lesson last night and I wanted to give a try. Done in Photoshop with a set of masks. This is the contender shot I did for today when I was talking to Bill Pador on the phone at lunch. Reflections off a table Table Reflections Have a nice day
Sept 21: Fall Colors
I captured this shot while walking around my backyard. I was looking to see what I could find for a POD that was different that what I normally have been shooting. I captured a few shots when this leaf, just starting to turn to fall colors, caught my eye. It was about 15” above ground so I sent the flash to +1 EV and the lens to a reasonable length for the flash and shot a few frames. I really liked the red and the green in the center of the leaf on this shot. I was pleased with the shot and did not have to go back out with the tripod or the fast glass for the shot.
Sept 20: Jellyfish paperweight
I was looking for something for today's picture when I saw this paperweight my wife had bought with this in mind. I setup the picture in the light box and took a group. I tried some lit from the bottom but the dome of the jelly fish did not come out so I bounced some light off a card and through the diffusor on the top to illuminate this. That was the only light source in the room at the time of the shot.
Sept 19: Indecision!
I captured this shot on my walk today at lunch. I walked inside the moat as I was hopeful there were some flowers still blooming in this area no with the cooler weather. The shot on the right I took first. I was actually standing in the flower bed to capture this shot. I worked my way around the back to get the lighting down on the front so I could back light the pedals in the shot. I got good lighting and saturation on the shot. The left shot I converted to B&W using a with a lean toward the high contrast. I pulled both shots into Photoshop, dropped the bit depth and size to ½. I filled the background with the lt blue off the right shot with the inner 2 bands of the frame coming from the pedals of the flower. The outer 2 bands are the pedals and the foreground color and added a bevel effect to the outer white layer. Have a great weekend everyone!
Sept 18: Heron on the moat wall
I caught this heron just as I was getting ready to go back into the gym from my walk. I had the macro mounted on the camera so I used the 105 as a prime lens to get this shot. The light was good for a change and he just sat there looking at me while I took this shot.. I liked the lighting and the way it lit his crown. I used a vignetting effect to make the frame. Happy Friday!
Sept 17: The first leaf of fall
I had a shot time to walk today as I had meetings right after my walk so I went a different short route. I took my macro and took some last of the year flowers and a butterfly. I was headed back to the gym to take my shower when I spotted this lone leaf on the concrete seawall. I was intrigued and took half a dozen shots in various positions and angles. Mostly as the wind was letting me know I was not in charge and I was chasing this leaf across the wall. Even blocking the wind some it moved. This is handheld at a higher ISO than normal to get the shot.. I thought the shot came out well and I was captured by the leaf colors. This is the first one I have seen change around here.
