Dec 31: Final sunset of 08
I went down to the river to capture the sunset and to play with some Cokin filters I got. This is the result of those shots. I used a combination of 2 filters to capture this effect and to mirror the effect on the water. I darkened the beach in CS as the ugly brown broken ground detracted from the shot.
Dec 30 Contrast in reality
I went out for a walk yesterday and I saw these plants growing at one of the houses. I walked over and took some shot playing with some settings and the filters. I liked this one with the filter after I did the conversion. So is it real or is it Memorex :)
Before you ask, yes I fell for it they are not real but silk :)
Have a great day

Dec 28: Fruity Coconut My interpretation of lime in the coconut. We did not have any fresh coconuts here so the best I could do was to work with this bed of coconut. I added the fresh limes and the oranges. I then shot this photo hoping not to have kitten help as they so much like to help with the still life shots I take. I got the idea for this shot when I was doing my challenge shot. My daughter did an alt shot on this theme here when I was finished. Cute picture. kara design Enjoy the day
Dec 27: Sharing
This is my sister Kathy and one of her dogs Tucker. Tucker decided to try to squeeze her off the love seat. He wanted the chair for himself. What makes this funnier is there was a house full of guests and no free seats.
I hope everyone had a nice Holiday and was able to spend some time with family and friends. I did and I am still visiting with some friends and will catchup with comments when I get some free time later today. Right now the girls have informed me I am taking them to breakfast.
have a great day
Dec 24: Lighthouse ornament
I took this last night as I remember this special ornament we have in a star holder and I wanted to share. My daughter picked this out when she was 6. These 2, the starfish on top, were for Daddy :) I used 2 tea light to provide the lighting. Straight from the camera. Wishing the best of the season to everyone!
Dec 22: A reading of the Christmas Carol I took this picture right after I got home from the dentist. I figured I had better do something quick before the Novocain wore off and I was not up to anything. Major work done on the way home, I lit this in my light tent and took a few shots to capture what I wanted. Please take a moment to look at the WE CARE POSTERS PROJECT I have joined with some other fellow SmugMuggersamd we are doing this to raise money for St. Jude Hospital. ALL proceeds from these sales go to this charity. WE don't make any money on this project.

Dec 21: Ornamental Reflections
I did some experimentation yesterday with a glass ornament that is not on the tree this year. Actually most of our glass, i.e. breakable, ornaments are not on the tree. We figured to not tempt fate with the new kitties and the Christmas tree. Anyway, I was messing with this ornament and some reflections and I liked what I got for reflections. Have a great day and I hope people are further along than we are for Christmas shopping and stuff. We have never been this far behind before.
Dec 20: Lillycott Gardens
I got this idea from Kathy when I saw here POD for Friday. I remembered our Dickens Village we have put away as the kittens would play havoc with these. The lighting is via a 60W on my desk behind me and the bulb in the village house itself. We normally have the 15 or so of these setup for christmas but decided that we wanted these in one peace so they are in a china cabinet right now. Hope everyone has their shopping done. I have to get a few frames today and I believe we are done,,,,,,, I hope. Still have cards to finish.
Dec 19: Backlit Ornament
I captured this last night as a quick POD. I was late for an appointment and had not shot anything all day. :)
Why is it at Christmas I always think I will catch up?? I have cards to do, more suspense's due at work and gifts to buy and wrap. Add to that the trip we took, I have and am still sick, decorating and other responsibilities and you get overload. I need a vacation from my vacation :)
Dec 18: Mitten's Christmas Card
My little helper in writing the Christmas cards. I got the setup idea from Carolyn and Mittens decided to investigate as I was shooting. I thought the shot was cute. I took Kathleen's idea to put her name on the envelope :) Hoping today will be better as I went home after 3 hrs and slept most of the day. This crud is for the birds!
Nov 17: Reflective SP
I took this Monday night, but as I was under the weather most of yesterday and asleep I did not take any pictures so I will use this shot. Thanks everyone for the well wishes!! I think the stuff the doc gave me is working as my head and chest feel better today and I am going to work. Kittens are sad as they had a buddy all day yesterday and a warn bed to sleep on :) I am using the couch as a tripod here.
Have a great day!
Dec 16: Marco
I am a lot late in posting, but as most know I have been fighting something. Well I went to the Doc yesterday and was told I have a major sinus infection and he gave me 2 weeks worth of stuff to break this up. My body is waging a war today and I woke for work feeling like I was a punching bag so I went back to bed Just getting up now 6 hrs later :) To be honest I am tired of fighting this bug!
This is my buddy Marco who I captured last night I was on the floor looking up at him and I just loved the look. I saw this when I came out from under the tree and I could not resist. Have a good day folks and I will do my best to catch up on the comments.
The Tungsten Challenge...12/15/08
The Challenge: Show us your interpretation of the word, "Tungsten."
The Participants: Kre8ive, The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Johnloguk, Lady Kate, MyKey, Trevlan, and myself.
The Result: My interoperation of this challenge was to take a shot of this cool bulb that I found in the store and show the tungsten element. YOu can clearly see the element in this bulb. I really loved the color I was able to get out of this swirled glass bulb Have a great Day all. BTW I would like to thank Guest again for Ornamental Reflections. I have this picture available as a poster on the WE CARE POSTERS PROJECT
Dec 14: Holiday Greetings:
I worked on this late last night as I started doing the christmas decorations for the house and the tree last night. I got everything down and I organized the outside lights, just need to finished them today. I did the same with the inside decorations. I just need to bring the tree in for the kittens to play with. I remembered about I had no POD so I also setup my Holiday Card shot shooting from the hip. I used the candy cane plate I bought at breakfast to setup the shot. Hope you all like the picture and enjoy the remainder of the weekend
Dec 13: Reflection Point I want to thank every one for the well wishes for both my wife & myself. Her procedure went well and I took good care of her. As I Spent my time this way I am using a shot from Disney. I processed these last night and I like this shot with the framing and the reflections in the water. Have a good weekend everyone! Please take a moment to look at the WE CARE POSTERS PROJECT I have joined with some other fellow SmugMuggersamd we are doing this to raise money for St. Jude Hospital. ALL proceeds from these sales go to this charity. WE don't make any money on this project.
Dec 12: Expression
I am still fighting something so I did not go out in the rain yesterday for a shot. I was processing some of my Disney shots and came across this shot I wanted to share. Happy Friday. My wife is having a procedure in the hosp today so it will be late before I can comment.
Nov 11: Winter Cabbage I went out for a walk yesterday afternoon soon after the rain. There was not a lot to see but I did see this nice cabbage in one of the yards and I was able to squat down without getting my dress clothes to wet to capture this shot. Probably not going to get much today it is coming down in sheets and that is the forecast for here today. Please take a moment to look at the WE CARE POSTERS PROJECT I have joined with some other fellow SmugMuggersamd we are doing this to raise money for St. Jude Hospital. ALL proceeds from these sales go to this charity. WE don't make any money on this project. I did choose a winner to the Monday challenge from Guest. Ornamental Reflections Thanks all for participating!
Dec 10: The Front This what I saw yesterday as I walked. I was watching a storm front coming in and wondering if i was going to make it back to the office before the rain. I did. I took this shot with the new Cokin filters I was trying for the 1st time yesterday. I used a graduated ND4 filter on the right side drop the exposure to a better level then I converted to black & white using Nik Silver effects pro in manual mode Please take a moment to look at the WE CARE POSTERS PROJECT I have joined with some other fellow SmugMuggersamd we are doing this to raise money for St. Jude Hospital. ALL proceeds from these sales go to this charity. WE don't make any money on this project.
Dec 9: Egret
I caught this Egret as I walked around a corner & he/she was standing there. I was able to capture a few shots before it flew away. I want to thank everyone for the nice comments, I am still fighting what ever this junk is and it is taking a toll on me plus I am still playing catchup at work and on the forum. I hope to catchup with everyone in the next day or so.
Thanks so very much for the title suggestions everyone! I now have to sit dow with all these great choices and decide.
Have a great day, John
The Title Me Challenge...12/08/08
The Challenge: This one is easy for our challenge group. All we had to do was take or present an untitled photo. The challenge goes out to our viewers. Give us a title! It will be up to the artist to choose the winner and it will be posted by Thursday morning. Come up with a great title and you can see it Thursday!
The Participants: Kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Johnloguk, Lady Kate, MyKey, Trevlan, and myself.
The Result: I am back from vacation. I brought myself a nice case of the flu on the last day, so Sunday I have been veging most of the day to try to recover. I owe comments and I will answer as I can. Thanks everyone for the nice comments. On this challenge shot, I took this at Disney is the only clue I will offer. I will also offer this picture with your title to the St Jude Posters. The winner will have their title posted on this poster and it will be available on the We Care Website. http://www.freethoughtphoto.com/stjude
I did choose a winner and I went with the Guest title. "Ornamental Reflections" Thanks all for participating The upload failed and I am late for work so I will fix this tonight when I come home.
The Plane (or Plain) Challenge...12/01/08
The Challenge: Create a photo with your interpretation of the word "Plane" (or "Plain").
The Participants: Kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Johnloguk, Lady Kate, and myself.
The Result: To Plane a piece of wood. I thought of this shot as I have woodworking stuff in my garage and the nice piece of cedar was calling to me. I stood out in my garage and hand planed this piece of cedar for about 20 min to get the finish and the angle I have here. I then brought the mess inside and took the shot. I kept the mess to a min :) As I have posted I am bound today for Disney for a week with my family and I will get back with everyone on there nice comments when I return. It was late Sat when I finished this and I had still not finished packing. My camera gear was done though :) have a great week everyone ]
Nov 29: Mini Ornaments
My daughter bought these little ornaments to go on her small tree they are the size of a nickel, ~ 2mm. I thought they were cute an make a god shot so I snapped a quick shot or 4 :) I liked the close up detail of this one so I am sharing this with everyone. Tomorrow I will put up my challenge shot before I get on the plane for out week away.
Thanks everyone for the wishes on our family vacation!!! We appreciate the wishes and will say hi to Mickey for you. Boy do I have a LOT to do today :)
Nov 28: Yellow Rose
I was out for my normal walk at lunch and I was very surprised to see this rose on the side of one of the buildings. I took advantage of the situation to capture the rose and I hope this little bud got to bloom. Happy Friday everyone
Note, we are Disney bound for a week on Sunday and I will be off the boards till I return the following Sunday.
Nov 27: Pelican in flight I was at lunch looking for something to shoot on a cold blustery day. I had my polarizer on and was shooting trees with berries as the sky was so blue. There are in my alt DP gallery. Alt DP shots At the end of the walk I came across these Pelicans flyiny and landing in the moat. I have never seen them there before so I snapped what I could, but most shots were dead into the sun. I got a lot of silhouette shots, but this one was good. I did work on this on this shot in PS to bring out some details as the backlight and the polarizer was killing my speed on the shot. The sun was right on his right wingtip on this shot HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE
Nov 26: Patterns in the sky
I captured this while out walking. I was looking for something to shoot and this caught my eye. I was really impressed with the patterns in the sky and all the trails they made. I had been testing out my new B&W circular polarizer that I plan to take on my trip next week. The fit and quality is considerably better than my old one. I converted this shot to B&W in PS, and adjusted the sliders to get the effect I was looking for. I exposed for the sky and not the buildings in this shot as I was not interested in the butler buildings in the foreground.
Nov 25: Jewelry box
I was inspired by the challenge shot I did to take this picture. Unlike the Bubinga box from the challenge, I did not make this box. This is my own jewelry box that I bough many years ago that started me making boxes when I did. The wood here is all natural and is Cocobolo. Cocobolo is a hard and a rosewood from central America Dalbergia retusa is the proper name. I love the reddish orange wood, it is a pleasure to work.
The TBD Challenge...11/24/08
The Challenge: Create a photo with your interpretation of the letters, "TBD."."
The Participants: Kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, jawsnap, Creative Deviance, Lady Kate, Johnloguk, Al Sharp, and myself.
The Result: For the letter "T" I choose top and tail. Marco helped me when I was taking the shot. The shot I inverted to get these colors. Like what I did yesterday. For the letter "B" I choose a Bubinga wood Box I made. For the letter "D" I choose Dragon and a book on Dragon'sblood by Todd McCraffeery. The blended these all together on one layer in PS. The box was actually shot on a white background
Nov 23: Toxic Cocktail Mystery drink. Can you guess what I did here. I was talking with Hillary yesterday and she told me to post this and see if folks can guess this. OK Hillary here is the shot, can you guess? I know one person knows as they gave me the base idea :) Happy Sunday. I will post the original to my contenders gallery tomorrow My THANKS to everyone who guessed. Peptp Bismol inverted in PS. The original shot is in my DP contenders gallery Pepto Thanks for the comments and guesses!
Nov 22: Angry Sky
I went for a walk yesterday while my car was being worked on and it started getting colder and very windy. I looked up and this is what I saw. As I made it back to where I was it started snowing. I think the wind jumped up 10 MPH and the temp ~ 5 in the matter of 10 min. I was hoping the camera and I would not get a bath before I got back to the car. Have a grate weekend
Nov 21: Flower in the Sun
I was surprised walking and saw this flower still blooming along side a sheltered side of a home on my walk. I am sure it had partially to do with the nearby dryer duct that was passing warm air. I took 3 shots of this flower and I liked this one the best. I really l liked the way the sun made the red-orange of the pedals glow.
Nov 19: The last Budding Rose
With the biting cold and wind yesterday I did not manage to capture anything worth using. I wanted to share this pink rose bloom I captured and did not use. With the biting cold and wind now I fear all the flowers are gone till spring. Rose was captured in the early morning sun.
Nov 18: Water Droplets
I found this leaf in the yard and I really liked the play of light on the leaf. The interplay with the features looked good and I was impressed with the shot. I had been walking around with my 70-200 on and the min distance with that lens is 5' so I was about 6' away from the leaf and still captured this shot. I did the conversion to B&W in PS and adjusted the setting till I found a point for the shot I liked. Enjoy and have a great day
The Tuner (Tooner) Challenge...11/03/08
The Challenge: Create a photo with your interpretation of the word, "Tuner (Tooner)."
The Participants: Kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, jawsnap, Creative Deviance, Lady Kate, and myself.
The Result: Sperzel Tuners For my shot I took this picture of my Carvin CC275 guitar with the Sperzel tuners. The shot shows off the abalone inlay in the headstock with the gold tuners on the mahogany wood. I use the tuners to tune the strings so I can play in key.
Nov 16: Reflections II
This is the mate shot to the one I took yesterday. This will give you a better idea of the material I used to make the reflections. I used a single Compact Fluorescent on the right side bounced into a white reflector disk. I placed the Crystal glass on black foam core. On the back wall I placed a piece of Mylar foil wrapping paper. The light was reflected into this paper and into the veins of the crystal. I hand held another piece of white foam core as a reflector to add light to the front of the glass. No polarizer in these shots as I wanted the refraction's from the glass in the picture. This and a timed exposure in manual using spot metering.
Thanks for all the great comments on the glass shot. Fighting a migraine again today, lost most of yesterday with one and today does not look better. I hope to be able to go out and get some shots today as the weather has finally stopped raining.
Nov 15: Reflections of??
I setup a studio shot yesterday to do something totally different; when I discovered this shot. I noticed the reflections of this in the glass and I thought it was really cool and I totally like the shot! I did several in varying positions and I liked this the best.
Today's question, can you guess at what I did? Hint this is a crystal glass stem. I will post a full shot tomorrow so you can see what I did. Enjoy the reflections, I did!
Nov 14: Sailing on the river
I captured this shot on Sunday while I was out taking a lot of shots and I really liked how the shot looked. I had originally tried a dry brush look but was not happy with the results at all. I did this painting look and was happy with the results so I am posting this. With the damp cold and the rain and my head cold I did not get a chance to take any pictures yesterday. Add to that the information they gave us yesterday at work really put a damper on my spirits for the day.
Today is a new day and Friday. Happy Friday all
Nov 13: Stonework Detail
I captured this yesterday on my walk at lunch. I had never noticed the rain detail of the stonework around the window . This keeps the rain from coming in the window. The doors at the bottom open to let out the water. I noticed this as one of the windows has the door stuck open, I liked this stone work detail. The shadow at the top of the window is dirt. The windows are really that dirty.
Nov 12: The Silhouette
I captured this tree for a shot I was thinking of as I liked the way it looked and the statement it made against the blue sky. I exposed for the sky using spot metering and took the shot. The only processing is to raise the black threshold a little and to dodge the bottom where a car's shiny back end was showing. Have a good day
Nov 11: reflective Orphan I decided to look for something different at lunch yesterday so I went into the Casemate museum to see what I could find. This shot of the Casemate club bar caught my eye and I to some shots from across the room with my flash. I like the different old bottles and the colors they presented. This is a close up I took of 2 of the bottles on the middle shelf Bottles I did a bit of processing on the bottles to enhance the colors
The Track Challenge...11/10/08
The Challenge: Create a photo with your interpretation of the word, "Track."
The Participants: Kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, jawsnap, Creative Deviance, and myself.
The Result: For this challenge I decided to do the verb form of the word track. This is a shot of my turntable, yes I still have one. I chose a limited edition Album by Grand Funk Railroad that I have. This LP is literally a gold color. I set the shot up in my studio and used multiple light sources. The primary lighting is Compact flourcents color corrected to 5000K. The light behind the needle is a CR123A Flashlight I was using to help light the tracks as the gold LP is hard to see. This is what caused the reflection of the cartridge and head on the record. The dots to the far rights are the speed tracking dots on the turntable. Finally, do you know how hard it is to get an accurate focused shot on a moving turntable :) So I took a "few" shots before I got this one. Have a great day everyone. Seeing Carolyn's comment I will add I bought this LP in 1973
Nov 9: Before the rain
I went to my favorite spot yesterday morning early with the intent of capturing a early fall morning on the water here. However mother nature had other ideas as it started to drizzle when I got there. I setup anyway and took some shots as I had drove 30 miles to get this shot. By the time I finished it was raining and I was getting wet. I was determined to get a few shots and this one shows the light leaving and the storm over the trees. The sun was behind me in this shot and I think that is the only reason I go this shot, Enjoy the weekend
Nov 8: Water drops & colors
I captured this shot in my own front yard yesterday. I was here waiting on the service guy while he was doing some system maintenance on my home HVAC system. I was looking at the rose in the front yard and noticed the leaves. I got down in the ground and took a few shot of the rain on the leaves. I really like the layout of this shot and the way the water was laying on the leaf leading your eyes away with all the colors in the foreground. Enjoy the weekend.
Nov 7: Reflections
The day was another dull grey overcast day so I came home with nothing to start with for a DP. I had a thought for a shot setup my gear and some lighting and proceeded to take a few shot from various angles. While taking the shot I saw these knobs reflecting off the plate and thought they would make a great shot. These are the the tone knobs on my Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass. The blue you see the black volume knob and the knurled tone controls if from a light source of a different temperature. I liked the effect and the way it looked and did not correct for this. Both lamps I used were different color temperatures, 3200K and 4200K with the 3200K giving that blue (cold) cast. You can see the curve of the ash body and the brown of the desk I laid this on. I liked the brown cast to the clear ash body so I did not place on a white board or black as I wanted some additional color in the shot. Happy Friday!
Nov 5: The Hub We had a power failure when I got home yesterday. My daughter meet me at the door to let me know there were no lights. As I had planned a studio shot for today I backup and thought again. It was raining and overcast so that limited me to the house. I saw my road bike when I was going in after opening the garage manually so my wife could get in.. I got my camera and I took several shot that I thought were good. I did a B&W of the front hub Front and a couple others of the rear. I had to reshoot the rear when the power came on as it was dusty and visible in the shot Also to note the bike is hanging from the garage ceiling in these shots. The posterized shot the hub has a halo at the top that is really dust :) Rear hub Not bad for a day when I had no shots to share. I did do some PS work on this shot to bring out the dynamics of the shot and the details of that rear hub
Nov 5: Rainy Days
I captured this shot after standing my 2+ hrs in line to vote yesterday. It was damp and dreary and captured the mood of how I felt as I went home to change out of my wet clothes so I could goto work. These leaves caught my eye as they lay in the gutter next to the car.
