2009 Trying to finish out the 09 with shots
A view from my trip to the park. I captured this shot while out in the park looking for pictures. (Newport News Park) I liked the colors of the leaves & did a little of SC in lightroom to call attention to them. Been real busy at work these last 2 days. I was all day yesterday in meetings, 8-5 in 3 meetings. We were suppose to leave early and I ended up staying late. A lot happening this week. I have a client shoot I leave for in 1 hr, Holiday today. Next 2 days I am on the road so my comments might be a bit slow till late in the evening.
Thanks everyone for all the comments yesterday on the marina shot. This was in Hampton Yacht Club in the early AM so the water was calm. To answer how, I used Lightroom to make the shot and tones.
Old Time Reflections
I captured this on the way into work. One of the views of the marina's I see taking an alternate way in to the office. I really linked the serene feel to the shot and wanted to try something different on this picture. I tried for an old time antique feel to the picture.
Thanks for all the comments on the leaves yesterday. Just proves I am nuts and you folks support my habit :) Have a great day
Really wet fall colors. Another shot I captured in the rain. These were in my back yard. This one was a bit harder as I has the 70-200mm ED on the camera and that is a heavy lens. I balanced the umbrella on my shoulders and took the shot as the rain ran down my back and pants. I was a bit wet as I took ~ 10 shots till I was happy as the sun was trying to come out. So I had rain and sun & a wet camera and photographer. But I got the shot :) Thanks everyone for yesterdays comments! Super busy yesterday. What I thought would be a quiet slow day turned out to be busy and I got no shots, never got my planned picture and the few I took last night ......yuck Have to d better tonight. Good part is my daughter 13, cleaned her room! Those with teenagers will understand. 14 bags of stuff went out! I can see the floor and even the closet is clean. We wonder what she wants???? We bought her christmas gifts yesterday, she did not know so that is not it.......
Have a great week
Hi Key Rose
Not everyone stands out in the yard in the rain holding a camera in one hand and an umbrella in the other. I was bored, need a shot, enough said :) To verify my wife, yes I am nuts. Just to prove it I have more shots of leaves etc I captured in the rain
Have a great day folks Thanks for all the guesses yesterday and to Maryanne (fotomom) for the correct guess on the horse stable.
I captured this in a bath the end of Oct and found the shot last night. Can you figure out what I am?? I am really intrigued with this shot as I pass this old building every weekend on my bike ride. It set way back off the road on an old dirt trail and looks lost and lonely. I traveled in one morning after parking my car on the side of the road and walked to capture this a a few other shots. I loved the look and feel of this shot and wanted to capture the B&W of this as this is how I saw this shot. I even shot this in camera B&W.
Has anyone figured out what the building is? it was not what I thought it was, I did not figure it out till I was around the back of this structure and could see into the building as the back has collapsed more. If no one guesses I will post the answer tomorrow.
We have a winner! fotomom (Maryanne) guessed correctly it is a horse stable. to the right where the ladder is is where the horses would go More noticeable from the back and other side you can see the feed grills Most of the structure is gone on the sides now.
I saw this Orchid plant in traders Joe's so we had to get the pant and try a few shots before I or my assistant Marco (cat) kill the plant. I do not seem to be able to have luck with orchids :( I love the way they look but the last one died despite all my best efforts I love the color and spots on the plant and the shape of the stamen on this one. I had the plant a week before I took the shot so I am hopeful, else it off to a friends that is good with these.
Happy Friday folks, off to a shoot now so I will catch comments later as I can.
It was Yummy!
I captured mittens here eating. I was laying on the floor with the 70-200 on the camera. This was capture hand held. I love the D700 as this was at ISO 2200 and if I had done this with my D200 this would have been very grainy. Straight from the camera @ f/2.8 with a small crop at the bottom to remove some junk at floor level with me.
Richard you are quick as I have not even finished typing :)
The old tree
Captured in Yorktown this tree has been there for years. I used the ultrawide on this shot and was inches way from the tree capturing this picture in the early morning light. I even rolled over my tripod in the process. I was wondering what was so lumpy in my back. I liked the angle and the textures of this old tree.
have a good day
Captured on the way to a photo shoot. I saw this on my way into a shot and had to turn around to go back and capture this scene. This is 30 min before sunrise, just starting to get some color in the sky. Scene is the Yorktown Battlefield entrance , crop due to the street signs on the colonial parkway I was on looked a bit ugly in the shot. I took several before I moved on to my next location. Cannon is on silent watch.
Have a good day everyone
Captured a fisherman coming in at sunset on the James River. 14-24mm ultra wide lens This was the last in the series I took with the rented lens before I shipped it back to BorrowLens.com The sun was out for a day and I was making the best of it. Just love the way the sky looks with an Ultrawide lens. Really impressed with this lens as there is little pincushion effect.
Water Drop Experiment
The rain the moved in yesterday is making it hard for me to get things done. First, thanks for all the nice comments on yesterday's Halloween shot. We all had fun yesterday with these shots :) I did manage to get my bike ride in, we did 39 mi and I did work in the yard after and I was wiped out after. I had planned on pictures before dinner but I faded. My daughter and friend went to Hallow O Scream @ Bush Gardens and had a blast.
I woke @ 4AM with a killer migraine and it is still here. I took my pills so 50% went away byt this weather shift is killing me. It was 80 yesterday (unusual for us) and 55 w/rain today.
The left shot is what my head feel like, IMPACT. I captured water dropping into a dish with strobes to stop the action and this is one of the many. The second is water and ink. The red is fountain pen ink the I was dropping by hand connecting with the drop coming up from the dish after impact. Water impacts like the 1st shot then rebounds up like the second in the blink of an eye. really cool to catch. A bit messy but fun, especially if you have cats that "assist" you with the shot :)
I saw this shot this morning and thought it was fitting. An available light but only 1/4 sec exposure and then I had a little fun in PS on the picture to go along with Halloween tonight. I thought this was fitting. I will catch your comments later, right now temps are warm and I am going to pedal my bike 40 miles while the weather is nice! Rain tomorrow so ride then work on the yard with the grass and the leaves when I return. Later tonight folks. Have a great day and weekend!
PS Thanks for all the nice comments on the grouping yesterday.
Available Light Shots
I thought to post this information instead of my planned shot. Continuing what johnloguk (john Bennett) started yesterday with his triplet on the available light shots. The left shot captured at 6AM just prior to the sun rising. I had my camera on a tripod. I would recommend the following: ISO 100 or as low as your camera allows to keep the noise down. Mirror up function on these 30 sec shots reduces vibration; I also add my bag to the tripod hook for weight. “Long Exposure Noise Reduction” option as Nikon calls it turned on, reduces noise in the shot. Remote trigger or timer function to trigger the shot.
Shot #2 in the center is another Av light shot, but much shorter as sun was coming up. Not to exciting but add a Neutral Density filter and look what happens.
Shot #3 has a 3 stop hard ND filter. I was holding back the sky exposing for the boats. I will also admit I bracketed this shot in 1 stop increments. f/16 all the way to f/2.8, I liked the f/4 shot the best as the water looked better rough not smooth like at f/16 with the longer exposure. I use the Singh-Ray filters that go in a Cokin holder so I can place them where I need or want them. Not the round filter units.
There is a great article on ND filter written by the late Galen Rowell. Well worth your time to read
I do not use many filters, but I find I use the Singh-Ray ND’s and Rev ND a lot on shots. I am very pleased with the results I get and if Singh-Ray does not have the filter you want they will make what you want in size, material & shape. I use the Cokin “P” size for my lens.
Bottom line, take some shot just before sunrise or just after sunset as the sky is still blue and you get great colors then. Experiment with your exposure and f/stop and have fun!
Note the EXIF data listed is for the last shot. EXIF for #1 is: D200, 30 sec, f/11, ISO 125, 32mm (24-70mm lens), 0 EV, manual mode, center weighted,
Trying to get the most out of that rented 14-24mm ultra wide, I was shooting everything I could trying to get use to the extra 4 degrees of perspective. Marco was asleep in the tower so I came over with the camera and took his picture. Here in the 2nd shoot he is looking at me and wondering what in blazes I want. How close am I? That white blob in the lower left is his back paw, I am 9" from his face in this shot. He did get a treat for his patience. For those wondering there is parallex involved in the shot as Marco's head is not that round. :)
Plug, if you need to rent camera gear try borrowlens.com, great folks and great service
Captured by hand holding the sunflower in one hand, D700 in the other. Shallow DOF for clean shot f/4.0 using 24-70mm I used the bush in the front yard for the green background.
I took this shot for a negative space project I was working on. Works well right now with all this rain we are getting. I should bloom soon :)
It all in your point of view. Shot taken with a 14-24mm lens. I was laying on the pier taking this shot. My camera was literally 2" above the water on a floating dock. An Ultra wide gives you a very different perspective and view on the subject.
Flower are blooming
First off, thank you to everyone and there wishes on the tribute photo to Bun-Bun. We greatly appreciate the comments.
I captured this in the yard in the afternoon sun. I saw the bloom while cutting the grass and came back out after I finished to capture this and a few other shot. I really liked the colors and the feel of this delicate flower. My daughter planted these last year. They bloomed through the pile of leaves still there :)
We came home from work today to find our 8 yr old bunny near death. She was in her cage on he side, had no interest in people or food. Normally she is hyper and begs for treats at the drop of a hat. She would not move or get up. We called a bunch of vets to find one who would see a rabbit. The vet we normally saw retired and they have no one to see exotic pets. I think I called half the emergency vets without much success. We found one where we take the kittens 30 miles up the road and made the trip. Bun was in a bad way and not responding well at all. The Vet told us it had moved to far to do much to save her. She recommend we euthanize her so she would not suffer. She said it was most likely age and an something else that caught her all of a sudden. We will miss her as she was the 1st rabbit/pet we got as a family. I wanted to do this little tribute to her from me. Bun was a mini Rex and full size.
My Road Bike
This is my 1993 Serotta Colorado Legend Ti road bike. I have logged thousands of miles on this bike since 93. The bike is equipped with Dura Ace groupo & Shimano WH7700 wheels. A lot of the components are old, but they have lasted and served me well. I have a some I have to replace now that age has caught up to as some have reached their service life. I do enjoy riding and I intend to more of it this spring and summer. I wanted to share this shot of the bike after I spent 4 hrs cleaning it, spring cleaning you know. Have a great day.
Lines and colors
Only a pedal head like me would think of this as I cleaned my road bike yesterday. I really liked how the lines flowed and the colors off the walls in the background.
Yes that is dirt in the spoke holes, I was not getting a qtip to get them that clean so they would be dirty in a week :) Stuff on the spokes is are wear, they are a bit old 2000 is when I bough them so you are seeing age on the flat black spokes and pits plus thousands of road miles that I have pedaled. Now that I have posted it is time for a ride befoe it hits that 93 mark today!
Crystal Ink Bottle
I am sharing a shot I took for another challenge. I came home last night to discover another loss from the lightning, my main backup external drive is in/out causing problems. Spent 1.5 hrs on the line with tech support ot identify the problem, I was having boot issues. Well the short is the drive is not trustworthy and all my 2004-2008 files are on here :( That is why Lightroom kept locking up and my computer would hangup. I lost 2 days worth of pictures, all the ones I did yesterday and the day before. I have the raw files but all the processing is gone.. I did one for today, but I was not happy with the shot and was tired. I wanted a non flower shot so vs the ones I took so here is one I took for the office supplies challenge.
This is a crystal ink bottle that I was changing ink in. I write with fountain pens so I use this to keep my ink on my desk. Right behind my digitizer and phone.
Have a great day Folks!
Azalea in the spring time
Converted this white azalea to B&W to show the depth and contrast of the bloom. I like the shot and they way it looked and felt after the conversion.
Thanks everyone for the nice comments on my drive. I will have to replace it now as it is officially DOA.
Flower in yard
Ligntning storm kept me off the net last night and from posting so I will be perusing today. I captured this in my front yard and got quite a few looks as I lay down in the gutter to get the angle I wanted to capture this shot. Hand held using the R1 flash setup and RRS brackets.
Lost my one of my backup drives to lighting last night I discover when booting this AM, the one that never shuts down will not load now. Guess I need a new one. Not that I am hurting for drive space on my new machine with 4TB of storage. Just a pain to lose my RAW storage drive.
April 15: Double shot of available light from Tx
Tax day brings a double stich from my trip to Houston Tx. These were both taken from my motel window n the 11th floor. The right is Astro's ball park were a game was in progress and on the left is the Toyota Dome taken from my room. Both shots were taken hand held at 3.5 sec exposure and hoping the shots came out as I forgot my tripod. I was pressed against the wall for the one shot
Smugmug Dinner in Houston
I was on travel for work in Houston and Karina was kind enough to setup a dinner for us to meet and chat. Those present are Karina Boese, her husband Dave, Shelly of SPCreative and Mike of MegaMike. Thanks to all for coming out and making this a wonderful and memorable evening for me!

Jan 10: Pelican in flight
I caught this pelican in flight over the moat today at lunch. They are rear in this area and i was very surprised to see them flying around and looking for food. I really liked this one when I did the crop as I could tell he was looking right at me on the fly by. I really liked the look in the eye on this one.
Thanks for all the well wishes! The pain is reduced, still sore but way more manageable.
Jan 9 Waterfall
You are getting one from the archives as I had major dental work done on the way home from work. Bottom line, I hurt. I am posting this and going to bed after I take a pain pill. Please enjoy
I was doing good last night, I sent this to the wrong gallery. Better today, but still sort
Jan 8: Surprise Sunrise
I captured this yesterday morning. Now what is surprising is when I went to work at 5:30 it was raining and foggy. When I go up to get my second cup of coffee I saw this peaking through the glass of one of the windows. I ran down to the car and grabbed my Pro1 and took a couple of shots. I took both portrait and landscape but this one looked the best as it showed more of the sky. I got my coffee went back to my e-mail and figured to come back in 30 min when the sun was up. 30 min later it was raining agin! The sun was out long enough for me to capture this sunrise :) We had heavy winds and rain all day. I was surprised to be able to capture this at all.
Have a great day every one! I hope to see the sun today :)
Jan 6: Pink Rose I bought my wife a flower arrangement yesterday and this is one of the roses out of the arrangement. I liked the veins and the softness of the flower. As it is pouring rain here today there may be more shots later tonight. Thanks for all the nice comments on the reflections shot. I had fun doing that. Alt Shot that Lady Kates will like Sleigh Enjoy!
The Reflection Challenge...01/05/09
The Challenge: Show us your interpretation of the word, "Reflection."
The Participants: Kre8ive, Bill Pador, Karina Boese, The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Johnloguk, Lady Kate, MyKey, Karina Boese, Trevlan, MSpencer, and myself.
The Result: One Chinese Cloisonné egg reflecting in the mirror. I placed the egg in such a way that it reflected in multiple mirrors to get this effect. The gold mylar on the bottom also reflected the egg. Have a great Day everyone!
Jan 4: Indoor Kite
This is an indoor kite I made my daughter. I made 3 when I made them. One is now broke, we gave one to her best friend and we have this one. These are made from tissue paper and balsa wood and are designed to fly in the house. You attach thread to the lower support and add that to a dowel rod and they fly great with just walking speed. Hours of fun for the kids :) This little kite is ~ 4" and is a mini of a Cody fighting kite.
Jan 3: Old House I captured this old house yesterday in the rain. Something about the house pulled at me and I had to go back and capture this shot even though it was a light rain. My camera spent the day drying after this. The others are here. Old House Have a good Day. I will catch up later today
Jan 1: Happy New Year!
Here is wishing everyone a happy new year! I took this shot tonight on the way for as walk. As the temps her dropped 30 degrees and the wind was blowing 35 mph I just grabbed a few shots and put the gear in the car. I had to try as the colors were so cool tonight with the blanket of pinks, reds and blues. No filters today, just mother nature. Going to bed now I will catch comments in the morning as Smuggie was down again tonight.
